Who needs this qualification?

This course is aimed at all members of staff who have to perform patient handling duties as part of their job role.

The course will introduce students to the causes of lower back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders, and how they can protect themselves.

Students will be shown and will demonstrate how to manoeuvre service users safely, reducing the risk of injury to both themselves and the service user.

Learning outcomes

Students will be introduced to, and demonstrate how to use mechanical and manual handling equipment - the course is bespoke in that any handling aids used by the care setting can be taught from;

  • slide sheets
  • bath hoists
  • hoists electric and manual
  • slings
  • wheelchairs
  • Spinning boards
  • Banana boards (Transiting boards)
  • Moving and handling belts
  • Air lifts
  • etc
Students will demonstrate how they can help to maintain the service users dignity whilst being moved, and the procedures in place to prevent infection and cross contamination.

Duration
- Half day programme (dependent upon the amount of equipment to be taught)
Assessment - Activities, practical assessment throughout the day, multiple choice examination

This course is limited to a maximum of 12 students to allow each student sufficient time to demonstrate to the instructor how to use the equipment properly.
